Sunset from Number Five Hill
Grandmas Back Porch

The view is from Rock Street at the top of Archbald's Number Five Hill, the original location of
the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company Gravity Railroad's Number Five lift.
In the mid 1800's, before steam locomotives, loaded anthracite coal cars were pulled to the peak
by a stationary, steam-powered "Donkey Engine". The cars then coasted downhill to Carbondale,
powered only by gravity.
Looking West, over the Lackawanna River Valley, you can see the purple hills through which
the challenging mountain road known as "The Wildcat" twists and turns.
This image evokes family memories of Grandma's back yard and picnics under the trees.
